Cobb Can Move Beginner Tips

Your first runs will be short. That is normal. Here is how to make them count.

Beginner mindset

Do not treat death as failure. Every death teaches a rule, a route or a habit, and runs are short on purpose — you will see the start of a new level within seconds.

You cannot kill Cobb and you are not supposed to fight it. Your whole job is to manage light, sound, items and timing long enough to open the route and reach the exit.

Your first five minutes

  1. Read the rule banner. It tells you how Cobb hunts this level — that decides everything else.
  2. Find coal. Coal fuels light, and light is the only thing Cobb avoids.
  3. Light your route. Keep the rooms you will actually walk through lit; ignore the rest.
  4. Locate the breakers and the exit. Know where you are going before Cobb starts pushing.
  5. Keep a rock in hand. A direct hit stuns Cobb and a thrown rock can pull it off your path.
  6. Leave the moment your route is open. Do not linger in a cleared level.

Deaths that catch every new player

Almost every early death is one of these. Knowing them in advance is half the fix:

  • Moving before reading the rule. You cannot counter a rule you did not see.
  • Burning all your coal too early. Light your path, not the whole floor.
  • Sprinting on a sound level. Noise pulls a HEAR-rule Cobb straight to you.
  • Cutting corners. Under REACH, Cobb’s grab is longer than it looks.
  • Never throwing your rock. A stun you do not use is wasted — do not die holding it.
  • Panicking. The game rewards attention over speed; slow, deliberate play survives longer.

Reading your first rules

You only need the simple version at first. Since v1.4, level 2 always rolls a sensory rule (HEAR, SEE or SMELL), so these three are the ones you will meet earliest:

RuleBeginner counter
HEARStop sprinting. Move a little, pause, then move again.
SEEStay out of Cobb’s line of sight — use walls and shadow.
SMELLKeep moving forward; do not backtrack through rooms you just left.
REACHGive corners a wide berth.
DUPLICATEKeep your route short and well lit.
FASTERDo not try to outrun Cobb — use light and rock stuns.

How to prioritise under pressure

When everything happens at once, do them in this order:

  1. Survive the next few seconds — break line of sight or stun Cobb if it is on you.
  2. Keep your current route lit so you do not get trapped in the dark.
  3. Make progress toward the exit (a breaker or a doorway), not busywork.
  4. Top up coal, rocks or carrots only when you have a safe moment.

Beating it once unlocks more

Clearing the seven-level Story campaign once unlocks a level-select menu (added in v1.5), so you can practise the floors that keep killing you.
