Game overview

Cobb Can Move is a top-down survival horror roguelite about light, sound and rules that change every level. You play a lone warden trapped in a dark, procedurally generated dungeon and hunted by Cobb — a long-armed red creature that fears the light. Each level is a short, brutal race: scavenge coal, keep rooms lit, flip the breakers, and reach the exit before Cobb reaches you.

It is genuinely tense rather than gory, and most runs are over in minutes. The Story campaign runs seven levels; Endless mode continues from level 3 onward for players who want more.

Who made Cobb Can Move?

Cobb Can Move is an indie game made by abho — a solo developer with a small collaborator team. The project was built in roughly one week for [Major Jam 7: Wild](https://itch.io/jam/major-jam-7-wild) in June 2025, a game jam it went on to win first place in. abho has continued to update the game steadily since launch.

The full team credited on the official itch.io page is:

  • abho — art, programming, game design
  • Vystel — programming
  • Federico — programming
  • frost — SFX, ambience
  • Jimmy — music, ambience
  • Imslandar and giohappy — playtesting

You can see the rest of abho's projects on the developer's itch.io page and read every devlog entry on the official devlog.

Lore and setting

The game does not narrate its lore — like most pure survival horror, the story is built into the environment and the rules. What you can piece together:

  • You are a lone warden trapped underground, in a dungeon-like complex of rooms, breaker panels and crawlspaces.
  • Cobb is something that lives in the dark. It has long arms, it can move, and it is afraid of light — every other rule of how it hunts you (sound, sight, smell, reach, duplicates, speed) shifts level by level.
  • Light is power. Coal fuels braziers and lanterns; without fuel, rooms go dark and Cobb closes in. Breakers reroute power and open paths.
  • Carrots keep you from starving on long runs. Rocks can be thrown to distract Cobb or, since v1.6, to stun it on a direct hit.
  • The campaign builds toward an escape rather than a confrontation — see the endings and game events guide for what actually happens across a run.

Why "Cobb can move"?

The title is a deliberate twist on a horror trope. Many horror creatures are scary because they are static — frozen statues, things in mirrors, things that only move when you don't look. Cobb's name is the punchline: Cobb can move. It is not bound by line of sight, and it does not stop when you stop looking.

Atmosphere and style

Cobb Can Move is pixel art, top-down, and built in Construct. The art and sound are all custom: art by abho in Aseprite, ambience by frost in Audacity, and music by Jimmy in FL Studio. The visual language is deliberately minimal — small sprites, hard shadows, a tight colour palette anchored on black and Cobb's signature red — so the readable rules and the lighting do the heavy lifting.

It is short and intense rather than gory. Most horror moments come from sound design and the changing rule banner, not jumpscares — though Cobb's grab animation is sharp enough to count as one.

Reception

Cobb Can Move launched as the first-place winner of Major Jam 7: Wild (June 2025) and built up steady word of mouth through updates v1.1–v1.5 over the following year. Around v1.5 it broke onto itch.io's popular browser games list, which is where most new players still discover it. The game currently sits at 4.7/5 from 556 ratings on its itch.io page.
